Out and back to check this mountain off the list. Uneventful hike, and the bugs were insane. The amount of trash at the ruins below the summit are a real buzzkill. :(
Quick out-and-back this morning before the scheduled afternoon thunder storms. From the Beech Road Parking Lot, took the Hasenclever Iron Trail to the Sterling Ridge Trail. Portion of the trail are a bit overgrown, but the path is blazed well the entire way. Trip was just over 7 miles, and I made it back to the car as the first big drops of rain started to fall.
Short hike through Norvin Green State Park. Parked at the Crescent Drive trailhead and took the Hewitt Butler Trail to the Long Hill summit. Formed a loop using the Overlook and Manaticut Point trails. About 7 miles round-trip. Several sections of the trail were very flooded after the rain we've been having.
Picked up my Pequannock Watershed Permit today and did quick afternoon hike up to the Kanouse summit while I was there. Took the Highlands Trail from the parking along the western shore of Echo Lake, then took the woods roads to the top. Turned around at the star/flag overlook and retraced my steps back to the car. 8.5 miles roundtrip of easy walking and only 560 feet of elevation gain. The bugs were out in full-force along the lake. Also, too much litter on the trails...
Had this section of the reservation all to myself... I guess no one wanted to hike in the rain. :/
The weather cleared in the afternoon long enough for me to enjoy some views at the nearby fire tower.
