We took the maze of colored trails from the parking area. It was a lovely sunny day so the NYC skyline was visible.
Parked on Beech Rd. because the bridge is still out at the ironworks. Took green to yellow to Highlands. Found the cairn to the left of the large blowdown. Approximately 7 miles round trip. Very buggy.
Green to White to Ice Cream to Bushwhack.
Did the classic red to blue. Surprised that the parking lot was 80% full on a cloudy midweek day in April. Met one hiker on the trail who said he hikes it twice a week.
The easy way to find the summit area is to take the AT off a woods road from from the Crater Lake parking lot. When the AT makes a sharp left you make a right and within 20 steps can see the fire tower. Bushwhack that way and check your coordinates for the summit. The road to Crater Lake should be called crater road. Beware the potholes.
A pleasant hike on a cool sunny day. Skunk cabbage and blooming myrtle added spring colors. The mountain bikers were out for practice.
Parked outside the gate to the old ski area on Weldon Rd. Was that an old stone chimney I saw on the way up? The peak has the remains of the ski lift stanchion. The ski trails look like fun. Might come back to snowshoe, assuming we ever get snow.
AT Ellie and AT Mike accompanied me for a lovely hike around Pine Swamp. Bush wacked behind the bench for the highpoint. Then it started to rain so we left to get some turkey leftovers.
Parked at the northern terminus of the 4 Birds Trail. There was just enough space for one car since there is new construction at this site. The Fall views are nice. Took a woods road off 4 Birds and then bush wacked a short distance following my hiking GPS.
Used the power line right of way from Notch Rd. to a woods road and followed my hiking GPS. Be watchful for ATV traffic in this area. Lorraine and I saw a big flock of turkeys near the summit.
The fire tower seems to be well maintained with a recent coat of paint. Fall views along the Highland Trail are quite good. Lorraine and I stopped to visit with the horses near P8.
