Sunrise Mountain is one of the few NJ 1K mountains that has a road to the top. Despite this, aspiring NJ 1Kers must hike to the summit! Perhaps the most common approach to Sunrise Mountain is from the Stony Lake trailhead in Stokes State Forest. Those who wish to take a more scenic route may hike it from the AT trailhead at Route 206: a 10 mile round trip. The summit of Sunrise Mountain is wide open with views to the East, South, West and an obstructed view to the North.
From Kittle Field Parking lot in Stokes we did a long loop going up Tower Trail then Appalachian Trail to Sunrise Mountain down Cartwright Trail and then on Swenson Trail on the way home. Beautiful fall day. Lots of hawks flying above Sunrise Mountain.
My 6 year old really enjoyed the pavilion. Pretty section of the AT with a side trail that had a little bench and a nice view. It was a hazy day so we couldn't see very far, but still nice.
