Pochuck Mountain is separated from the rest of the Highlands by the Vernon Valley. The mountain boasts a series of interesting rock outcroppings as well as a pleasant hemlock grove on its western slopes. There are winter views from the summit of the Wallkill Valley and the Vernon Valley.
Pochuck has several summits, with the northern summit being crossed by the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately for AT hikers, the true summit is south of the AT.
Parked at the end of Jenny Layne at the cul-de-sac and too a woods road up the side of the mountain. I bushwhacked up the steeper portions of the mountain, intersecting another woods road closer to the top. Made it to the summit and retraced my steps back to the car.
Parked at end of Jenny Layne. Took woods road up part way then bushwhacked til we hit another trail up to ridge and summit. Started back same way then slowly bushwhacked down steep and rocky section to woods road we started on.
Hiked an in & out with Tammy. We parked on McAfee-Glenwood Rd. Took the AT along the boardwalk through the Pochuck Valley. We stopped at Heaven Hill Farm for cider donuts before climbing Stairway to Heaven. At summit, we took the blue trail to the pinwheel vista where we stopped and enjoyed the gorgeous view. Continued back on to the AT, reached the mailbox & left a note before turning back.
