Drag Hill is one of the Ramapo's rather anonymous summits. A pipeline nearly crosses over the top of it and there is an old ATV trail that leads to its grassy summit where there are Westward views.
The photograph above was taken from Ilgenstein Rock.
My co-pilot clearly thinks this peak lives up to its name – What a Drag. She couldn’t bear to stay awake, even with all the heavy panting and sweating her out of shape daddy was doing.
Up the Yellow, to white, to the pipeline we went from the parking lot on 202.
Most of the trails were well packed single tracks in the snow. Microspikes worked perfectly. Though the last bit up to the top may have warranted snowshoes.
I parked in the main lot at Ramapo Reservation. Headed in along the orange trail, passing the waterfall. Proceeded to blue, then pink counter clockwise around the reservoir to pink/blue and connected with blue trail again. Met up with red/silver and popped out at the base of the pipe line. Ran up the pipeline/ Drag Hill and took the side path to the summit. From Drag Hill, I continued on passing the power facility/tower & turned left heading down to Halifax (green). Connected with the Shore trail (blue) to Cannonball, then White trail to summit Ilgenstein Rock. Two MTB passed by the summit just before I took my pic of Drag Hill from here. It started to flurry at this point. Made my way back out along Hoeferlin Memorial trail (yellow) to Shore trail (blue). The snow was sticking and it looked really pretty. Jumped back to red/silver, to blue, to red towards MacMillan Reservoir. Finishing up along the pink trail, to blue down to Scarlet Oak Pond. One last loop around the pond and back to my car happily covered in snow.
Parked at the Ramapo Reservation parking lot and took the yellow trail up to the ridge overlook for sunrise. Eventually started making my way on the white trail until I got close to a woods road that lead to the gas line cut that goes up the mountain. Took that all the way to the top and followed a small herd path to the highest point.
Did Bald Mountain, Drag Hill and Rocky Mountain in one loop with John. Starting in lot at Ramapo Valley County Reservation we hit Bald Mt first and headed up the road near the gate to the gas plant and up from there to Drag Hill. From there we went dow the hill on the gravelly, rocky descent and then started back up toward Rocky Mountain after passing the Silver Red trail. We cut into the woods from the road and bushwhacked the last few tenths of a mile to the summit. From there we bushwhacked back down to the silver Red. That section was a bit dicey given steep pitches in places and a leaf covered ground. Once back on the SIlver red we headed back to the lot on marked trail going by the reservoir and the waterfall.
